22 hands-on, art-integrated math projects suitable for 3rd grade.
The Math Art supplemental curriculum can assist with the instruction of the following math skills and concepts that 3rd graders are required to learn:
- Identifying, representing, and comparing numbers up to 1000
- Memorization and understanding of place value
- Skip counting by numbers 2 through 10
- Understanding the basics of fractions — especially the concepts "numerator" and "denominator"
- Memorizing and visually representing multiplication facts
- Adding and subtracting coins and making change
- Calculating linear measurements
- Measuring area and perimeter of complex shapes
- Measuring the volume of various boxes
- Describing, identifying, creating, and sorting various 2D shapes
- Comparing, sorting, and describing 3D shapes using "face," "vertex," and "edge"
- Performing and identifying flips, slides, and turns
- Identifying symmetrical shapes and lines of symmetry
- Reading and plotting locations on a grid
- Constructing and interpreting bar graphs, line graphs, and circle graphs
The supplemental curriculum can also introduce 3rd graders to the following skills, which they will eventually need to master in later grades:
- Identifying and understanding square numbers
- Measuring and comparing angle measurements up to 360 degrees
- Identifying similar and congruent shapes
- Calculating "real life" distances using a map scale
- Creating circles using given radii
